Scientific school of the Department of Power Systems Automation

Theory, Methods, and Means
of Electric Power Systems Control

Scientific Supervisor of the School: Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Yandulskyi, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, former long-serving Dean of the FEPEA, Scientific Supervisor of the Department of Power Systems Automation.

The fundamental and applied scientific school was founded in 1962 by PhD, Professor Yurii Hyzyla – a well-known specialist in relay protection and automation of power systems, Head of the Department of Power Systems Automation, and D.Sc., Professor Yosyp Hreben – a recognized expert in automation and telemechanics.

The core of the scientific school consists of academic staff members of the Department of Power Systems Automation at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The nature of the school’s research: fundamental, applied.

  • Fundamental research of the school is aimed at developing theories of modeling, analysis, and synthesis of control systems, as well as creating new approaches, methods, and tools to improve the efficiency of electric power systems.
  • Applied research of the school focuses on enhancing the performance of the automatic frequency and power regulation system of the United Energy System of Ukraine, and the development and implementation of an automated system for collecting information from microprocessor devices, designed to gather and transmit both discrete and analog data from normal and emergency operation modes of power facilities to upper levels.

Over the past 10 years, the school’s scientists have established educational centers and laboratories (in cooperation with ABB, Siemens, and DTEK), which operate as part of scientific research, the educational process, and professional development. In particular, three fundamental state-funded projects have been completed, whose results were applied in 135 contractual projects.

During the existence of the school: 5 Doctors, 43 Candidates of Sciences, and about 90 Masters have been trained; 22 monographs and 30 textbooks and teaching aids published; over 312 research projects completed, most of which were implemented in practice; around 700 scientific publications issued in professional journals; more than 45 intellectual property protection documents obtained.

Awards received: State Prize of Ukraine (Professor Oleksandr Yandulskyi, 2010), Serhii Khrushchev Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) (Professor Oleksandr Yandulskyi, 2000), Certificate of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Professor Oleksandr Yandulskyi), 2 wins in the “Leader of the Fuel and Energy Complex” contest (Professor Oleksandr Yandulskyi, 2006; Associate Professor Dmytro Dmitrenko, 2008), NASU Prize for Young Scientists (Associate Professor Anton Stelyuk, 2010), President of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists (Artem Nesterko, 2018).

The school’s researchers maintain international cooperation with Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (Germany), University of Applied Sciences of Hessen (Germany), and corporations ABB, Siemens, Alstom, Schneider Electric, PHNIX to improve the efficiency of power systems management under collaboration agreements. Joint research and implementation are conducted, with results discussed at conferences.
